Pari revolving the 'Wheel of Life' in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh
My dear readers, with excitement, relief as well as some amount of trepidation I am announcing some significant changes to Mommy Labs!
I can feel some dejavou doing such an annoucnement at this time of the year. Do you sense it, too? I say dejavou because it was in November last year that I announced Mommy Labs as an offshoot to Gorgeous Karma – the blog I started in August 2009.
I created Mommy Labs so that, on it, I could focus only on creative learning for kids while I continued to write on Gorgeous Karma about my other passions – natural health, travel, green living, pursuing dreams.
Within this one year of juggling the two blogs, life has evolved for me in many significant ways. And, one big change on the home front has been – my decision to homeschool Pari. "What, homeschool – when, why, how?", you might be wondering with questions galore in your head. Well, I will write about that sometime soon. (smiles).
But, what I want to tell you is – priorities needed major reshuffling due to this very reason – that I needed a chunk of time to be able to focus on Pari's homeschooling.
This reason, coupled with the fact that I'm now considering extending my family! Hold on, I am NOT in that mode already. But, am looking forward to. This decision itself has been very long-winding. I've swayed both ways over and over again for the past two years. My family and a few close friends who also happen to be my blog readers are testimony to my mental and emotional struggle!
But, when the clarity of thought came (it came like a vision!), there was no denying that I want another baby.
The heart triumphed.
It has always been like that for me…
Hence, it was prudent to re-look at all the things I have right now on my To Do list and to keep only those that I can do full justice to – now as well as in the future.
The two blogs have been a significant part of my work – work that I love doing. But, I was finding it extremely difficult to write regularly for both – thrice a week or even once a week.
The result – Gorgeous Karma was falling through the creeks. I have not written an article there for three months now.
And, the decision…
Both my heart and mind told me it's best to merge the two.
The reality is – finding time to write for both the blogs is not that big a challenge. The challlenge is to manage both; form a community for both; interact with readers on a daily basis over there and over here. If I can't take the time out to do this, I miss being part of a supportive community and reader interaction – an aspect so central to blogging and so dear to us bloggers.
By focusing all my love and energy on one blog, I can help my message reach out to many more and connect with so many readers.
So, in a way, I'm back to where I started. But this time, it's Mommy Labs that stays on.
What it means for you – my dear readers..
The essence of this change is – on Mommy Labs, I will continue to write primarily about creating learning for kids – twice or thrice a week. Plus, now on, I will also share articles on other topics here that I used to write until now on Gorgeous Karma. And those topics are – Natural Health, Travel, Intentional Living, Green Ideas etc.
In fact, the articles that used to be on Gorgeous Karma are now already part of Mommy Labs' archives.
The content changes are now reflecting in the navigation bar on the top.
So, for you, how you browse through the site is going to be a different experience. And, I hope, enjoyable too as you can now read articles on a gamut of topics – topics that are so much a part of us mothers' daily lives, thoughts and interests.
I have tried to keep the main categories minimal and intuitive.
In the top navgation bar, you can now browse articles under 4 main categories –
Under Creative Kids, the various sub-categories are:
Under Holistic Living, I've not introduced any sub category yet. I may do that in the future when I have a size-able number of articles.
Through 'My Travelouge', I'll share my views and photo essays about different places in India and outside that we travel to and that you would like to as well.
Under 'Me Time' – as the name suggests – I'll share my tinkering with art and DIY; good reads, tasty and healthy bites, and my passion – photography.
The Blog URL and Your Subscription here:
Mommy labs is now a stand-alone domain name unlike earlier when it was hosted on the Gorgeous Karma domain and the URL was an extension of it.
Hence, the new URL now is – www.mommy-labs.com
The old URL – https://www.mommy-labs.com will exist for some time and will redirect to the new address before I eventually close it altogether.
Those of you who subscribed to Mommy Labs via e-mail – your subscription will remain intact for the new address. Same goes for your connection with Mommy labs on Facebook and Twitter.
Those who subscribed to the RSS feeds, I need a few more days to see if you need to resubscribe or will continue to get the feeds with your old subscription. I'll come back to you on this.
Option to Subscribe to 'Content Category' of your Choice
Another important feature Avie (my hubby and tech saviour!) is figuring out is – the option for my readers to subscribe to the categories of your choice. Which means, if you're interested in – let's say – 'Creative Kids', you will not get the e-mail updates or feeds for other categories. Or, if my readers from Gorgeous Karma are interested in 'Holistic Living' or 'My Travelouge', they will get just those post updates. I think this feature will be very relevant for you all. But, we're still working on it. I'll let you know as soon as it's ready.
The publishing schedule
In the short run, with trial and error, my aim is to come up with a posting schedule for these subjects. Depending on time and effort that writing for each category requires, I will try to publish anything between 3-5 times a week. That sounds ambitious given that I have never been able to post more than 3 times a week until now. But, the truth is, I love writing and I adore connecting with you. Hence, writing as often as possible should never be a drag but a therapy! Honest!
Other changes coming up:
Banner and Tagline: What you see today is not the final look. There are few more things I need to look into and the top banner is one of them. I think it's high time I changed that to paint a fresh look. Don't you think so? I will come back to seek your opinion when I have a few banners ready.
And, the tagline too. The current one – "Creative, Artful Holistic Parenting" needs to be tweaked to reflect other topics that are now part of this blog.
I wholeheartedly welcome any tagline sugestions from you. (smiles)
I'll be adding couple of more pages like – Blog Roll, Links to published articles elsewhere. I'll also be updating my "About Me' page as – like I said – life has evolved ever since this blog started. (smiles)
Besides, I have also decided to accept sponsored ads on this blog now. It's been 2.5 years of blogging since I started Gorgeous Karma and then Mommy Labs. Getting some income to support my family through this blog will go a long way and take the pressure off my hubby.
I may not have told you this earlier – that – I winded up my small handmade jewellery business to be able to focus solely on writing. Ever since, I have not been able to contribute financially to my family. Making some income – however small – through this blog, will help support my family and help me achieve self-satisfaction too.
Having said that, I will take sponsored ads from only those companies/products that go well with the philosophy of this blog and that will be beneficial to know for my readers.
If you know of any such product/company that may want to advertise, do let me know. I'll appreciate any help (smiles).
Your feedback :)
Now, I wait for your thoughts, views and suggestions. Do you like these changes. Are you comfortable with them?
- Is there any topic you would want me to add? Anything here that you would rather not want?
- Any questions? Pressing or passing? Please don't hesitate to let me know.
It's only due to YOU, your reading, comments and connection that I feel motivated to write day after day. Without you, this place would be so lonely.
So, please share openly.
I need help sustaining this blog…
Dear blog readers – It’s been exactly eight years now that I’ve been writing on this blog! Yes, eight long years and hundreds of articles. From art, creativity and learning; to food, health, gardening, travel, sustainable and mindful living, natural birth. In our un-schooling life, as we go on introspecting, questioning and evolving, I’ve strived to share our stories and experiences with as much honesty, care and sincerity as possible.
I spend hours writing an article – and often write and rewrite many times before it rings true to me and sounds worthy of your time to read.
The most important thing for me is to keep this blogging endeavour authentic and true to my values. This blog has been my sacred space to express, share, feel empowered and contribute. Hence, I do not like to support businesses that don’t align with my values. So far, I’ve rarely taken sponsorship from brands and companies. I haven’t placed any ads on my blog, though there have been multiple offers.
Infact, I’d like to keep this blog ad free unless something truly meaningful comes across.
Yet, there’s a cost to running this blog. The basic cost of keeping the domain alive, and hosting all this content on. I spend roughly INR 10,000 (USD 173) just to keep this blog up and running. So, I need to cover this cost. Plus, it’d be nice to bring in some income for our family of four. And, this is where I request your support.
If you find my articles and stories useful or inspiring at some level, please help me sustain. Starting from 1 dollar or 100 rupees to whatever you can, do consider donating for the content I share; for my intention and the time and effort I put. Your support will go a long way in keeping this blog (of 8+ years) sparkling with stories for many more years to come. Thank you, dear ones. I’ll value what you’ll gift with love and kindness. :-)
